Baristas, are you up for the SP9 Brew Master Challenge?
Test your coffee knowledge and show-off your pour-over skills using the Marco SP9
for a chance to win:
$2,000 AUD & a SP9 Twin for your chosen café/roastery.

  • Dates
    • Entry applications are open from Monday 26th September 2022 to 31st October 2022 at 16.00 ACT.
  • Who Should Enter?
    • Baristas or coffee professionals who take pride in their pour-over skills and who may want to compete globally in the future (e.g. Brewers Cup)
    • Preferably some experience with the Marco SP9 Brewer (although this isn’t mandatory)
    • Entrants must be legally resident in Australia and over 18 before 25th October 2022.
  • Then What?
    • After the contest closes, the organisers will choose 12 qualifying contestants to compete on 25th November 2022 in Melbourne.

    1st place

    $2,000 AUD, an SP9 Twin for your chosen roastery/café
    and the title of “SP9 Brew Master”

    Competition Format

    Competing for $2,000 AUD, an SP9 for any chosen roastery/café and the title of “SP9 Brew Master,” 12 competitors will be judged by leading experts in the Australian speciality coffee community, who will act as both sensory and technical judges.

    The event will take place over one day at a location in Melbourne and will contest of 2 rounds.

    Round 1 – Preliminary Knock Out 

    • 12 competitors will compete head-to-head in pairs of 6
    • Each pair will flip a coin, the winner of the coin-toss must spin the wheel to determine which brewing vessel will be used.
    • Both competitors must use the same brewing vessel
    • All competitors will use the same coffee, grinder and water temperature. Competitors CAN use other accessories (e.g. stirrers)
    • Competitors will get 5 minutes to prepare, 10 minutes to brew on the Marco SP9 and 5 mins to clean up
    • No presentation will be required – competitors will be assessed solely on the sensory merits of the coffee they brew and serve.
      • Assessment will consist of judges blind-tasting the two brews and on the count of 3 must point to their favourite brew.

    Round 2 – Final Showdown

    • The 6 finalists will compete in sequence
    • They must each select 1 coffee from a choice of 3
    • Coffees will each by high-scoring micro-lots of similar style
    • Finalists can cup 3 coffees provided to determine their selection
    • Finalists can select their own brewing device, water temperature (on the Marco SP9,) grind size and recipe
    • Finalists will present their coffee to the judges who will complete a sensory score-sheet.

    • General

      • The “Marco SP9 Brew Master Contest” opens at 16.00 ACT on Monday 26th September 2022 and closes at 16.00 ACT on the 31st of October 2022.
      • Marco SP9 Brew Master Contest is an event wholly owned by Marco Beverages Systems Ltd (Marco.) The objective of the contest is to find the SP9 Brew Master in Australia. Judging will be carried out by three coffee professionals chosen by Marco, who will use a sensory score-card to determine the overall winner. A copy of that score-card will be made available before the event.
      • Entrants must be legally resident in Australia and over 18 before 25th October 2022.
      • By participating in the Contest, contestants are deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.

    • Contestants Entries and Selection

      • To enter, applicants must submit a video describing their name, location and their personal answer to the question “if you had one coffee super-power, what would it be?”
      • The suggested length of the video is between thirty seconds and 1 minute. The video is not expected to be professionally produced but can be done using any technology (cameras, smartphones
        or animation) and edited by the participants themselves.
      • While copyright remains with the entrant, Marco reserves the right to publish/broadcast or promote entries in any medium or format of their choosing.
      • Video must be submitted in English.
      • It is the responsibility of each entrant to ensure that all videos have been taken with the permission of the subject(s) (or, where the submission shows any underage persons, the consent of their parent)
        and/or venue/location/photo or sound owner and does not infringe on the copyright of any third party. Entrants guarantee that they own the copyright for the submissions and for the usage rights
        required by the contest, and that their entry does not infringe on the privacy rights, copyright or any other rights of any person.
      • The entrant further agrees to indemnify, hold and save harmless and defend at his/her/their own expense, Marco Beverage Systems Ltd., against any claims, suits, liability, and demands made by any third parties in respect of such infringement or other hazards that may be suffered by the entrant as a result of his/her participation in this contest.
      • The 12 contestants will be chosen by Marco Beverage Systems Ltd. Contestants will be chosen based on the most interesting entertaining and/or engaging answer to the qualifying entry question. Marco retains sole discretion on choice of  final contestants.
      • Contestants may be requested to offer support to promotional activities related to the campaign and this contest such as personal profiles, background information and photos.
      • Marco reserves the right to replace or remove any contestant it deems acting in a way that contradicts or negatively impacts Marco’s brand identity or values.

    • Prizes

      • Prizes consist of:
        • $2,000 AUD deposited directly into winner’s bank account
        • 1 x Marco SP9 Twin to be installed into a commercial premises (café or roastery) of the winners’ choosing.
          • Marco SP9 Twin will be installed and serviced by a third-party of Marco’s choosing. Service and warranty agreement will be between the chosen third-party and commercial premises.
      • Marco reserves the right to substitute with an element of equal or greater value.
      • Marco reserves the right withhold prizes without liability if in its view a winner is ineligible, the entry is invalid or a winner does not meet the necessary requirements as set out in these terms and conditions.
      • Marco reserves the right to withdraw or amend the Contest in the event of unforeseen circumstances or circumstances outside of its control.
