This certification solidifies Marco’s vision of “a healthy world where every drink exceeds expectations.” This vision drives us forward, encouraging us to think about things in a new way, which includes how to pursue sustainable practices, transparency, and social responsibility throughout our business.
We want Marco to be a force for good in this world, and we want our customers, communities, and employees to feel proud to work at and do business with Marco.
What is B Corp?
B Corp is a globally recognised assessment that measures a company’s entire social and environmental impact. Companies that achieve a B Corp certification are committed to being a force for good by balancing purpose and profit.
In order to achieve certification, a company must:
- Demonstrate high social and environmental performance.
- Make a legal commitment by changing their corporate governance structure to be accountable to all stakeholders, not just shareholders,
- Exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.
Our Overall B Impact Score
Companies seeking B Corp Certification must undergo a formal B Impact Assessment, which will result in a B-Impact score.
As part of our B Corp journey, we aligned our process with our 4 ESG “Focus Areas”: Operations, Employees, Environment, and Community.

- Green-house Gas Emissions

- Marco began regularly cataloguing its greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in a reduction of our emissions from 1906 tonnes (Oct 21 to Mar 22) to 880 tonnes (Oct 22 to Mar 23)

- Waterless Testing (benchmarked against others in the industry)
- For over a decade, Marco has utilised a means of waterless testing in our production facilities to allow us to test many of our machines without water or the energy required to heat that water. A case study has found that we are unique in our industry for doing this and bringing a reduction in water usage and energy usage as well as increasing the efficiency of our factories.
- Employee
Marco began analysing diversity and inclusion within the business, while taking a number of steps to ensure that underrepresented areas get considered. The most notable of these are the drive to hire for roles so that they are gender balanced, cultural awareness initiatives, D&I training and being proactive in promoting engineering as a viable career for women.
This resulted in:

- Going from 0 to 20% female breakdown on our senior management team from 2021 to 2022
- Nearly 50% of females participated in our 2023 Future Leaders Development programme
- A number of D&I initiatives including culture days, mental Health Initiatives, LGBTQI+ Parental, Adoptive & Fertility Leave Policies
- Environment
- Marco is partnering with Nature Trust, an Irish organisation dedicated to reforestation in Ireland to purchase land to reforest in order to help promote ecological balance, offset greenhouse gas emissions, and provide forestry that can be used by people as a local amenity.

- Our MIX and Ecoboiler are the best in the business for energy efficiency
- Community

- Scholarships
- We have sponsored a TUD engineering student who was in danger of having to stop her education and leave Ireland and she will be getting work experience also.
- Charity Committee
- There is a charitable committee in Marco (formally created as part of BCorp submission) to allow us to continue and improve our positive impact on the community.
- Industry bodies
- We have sponsored many community events within our industry through the Specialty Coffee Association, our own “Best Brewer” event, and the “Glitter Cat” contest with both focused on supporting and coming baristas.
